Quality Driver Training to the Transport Industry

LGS is an accredited FORS training provider and can offer the following training courses:

Safe Urban Driving (SUD)

Companies e.g. Laing O’Rourke, Berkley Group, Carillion, Costain, Cemex, Hansons etc. Vehicle and Driver checks will, in future, be carried out before vehicles are allowed access to sites. Drivers who are not compliant will not be allowed to make deliveries. Also, a ‘site vehicle check non-compliance form’ will be sent to the supplier. This means that hauliers will lose work to approved haulage companies.

LGS Transport Training is the first training company outside of the M25 corridor to be approved to deliver CLOCS training. The course consists of two 3.5 hour modules, one classroom based and one practical module where drivers can get on bikes and get a cyclists view of the road. The two modules are taught on the same day with up to twenty drivers participating in two groups of ten. The course will be held at a suitable location within the Somerset, Wiltshire, Dorset, Devon, Gloucester, Hampshire, Berkshire, Oxfordshire and South Wales (subject to site approval).

Theory content:

Appreciate how and why roads are changing to accommodate active travel (i.e. walking and cycling)

Identify the most vulnerable road users and how they interact with traffic

Share the roads safely with others through applying defensive driving techniques

Know the use and limitations of supplementary vehicle safety equipment and how to maintain its effectiveness

Practical content:

Gain first-hand experience as a vulnerable road user, through on cycle hazard awareness, and recognise why cyclists behave the way they do:

  • Demonstrate control of a bike
  • Demonstrate where to ride on the road and the use and limitations of cycle infrastructure
  • Tackle challenging roads and traffic situations
  • Demonstrate how and when to pass queuing traffic
  • Identify and react to hazardous road surfaces
  • Use the experience of having cycled in moving traffic to improve driving standards and consideration for others

Truck Smart

TruckSmart driver training is a seven-hour training course for all commercial HGV drivers, with a supporting toolkit for Fleet Managers equipping them with the knowledge and skills to operate and manage safe and roadworthy vehicles.

TruckSmart focuses on the importance of driving roadworthy HGVs and the role of the driver in ensuring that vehicles and loads are safe and legal at all times. Alongside TruckSmart driver training, there is an eLearning module. The accompanying TruckSmart Fleet Manager Toolkit provides tools, guidance and resources for managers looking to develop and implement an HGV safety system within their organisation.

TruckSmart tracks a series of five themes. These five simple messages are echoed throughout both the TruckSmart training course and the accompanying fleet manager toolkit.

They are:

  • Know it: a safe vehicle matters
  • Check it: walk around before, during and after journeys
  • Load it: plan and position your load safely
  • Secure it: secure your load correctly
  • Report it: record problems and take action

Van Smart

Van Smart is a Transport for London (TfL) backed driver training programme that aims to reduce work related road risks, improve safety and create long-term behavioural change in the van sector.

Van Smart is delivered in two sections, a classroom theory module and a practical cycling module, where van drivers experience a cyclist’s view of the road. The two modules are delivered on the same day, and courses are run around the country by a number of training providers.

Van Smart Training is DCPC accredited and fully aligned to meet the requirements of:

  • Work Related Road Risk (WRRR)
  • Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) Silver level
